Society of Illustrators Visit 3/28
What is the purpose of the Society of Illustrators?
The purpose of the Society of Illustrators is to promote the art and appreciation of illustration, its history and evolving nature through exhibitions, lectures and education.
Reflection:
My favorite part of the exhibition was seeing familiar artworks and experiencing seeing different pieces in diverse perspectives. The lower level was just the beginning of the entire exhibit and it was such a nice experience to see various art styles all around me, and how each of them are art and yet there's really no set definition of "true art", it's only merely a form of expression and the standard tools to illustrate just give the standards which then eventually allows the artist to put on paper how well.
This was one of the artworks that stood out to me. The concept is shown as a couple in love and yet only the top part of the woman is drawn but the mind completes the rest of how the illustration is supposed to look like. The hint of color also sets the mood for the couple shown and the woman's alcohol drink indicates their age and the time period of the artist and the way couples were like at that time period.
This was another artwork that stood out to me as I enjoy that art style of women and men dressing up for the everyday tasks, and the media used for this paint was oil paints which is seen as the pigments are vibrant and the colors are unmatched. It was extremely visually pleasing and the details make it seem as if it were a scene out of a movie or so.
I also really enjoyed the second floor with all the crisp linework and illustrations that the museum are proud of having on display. As someone who illustrates manga-like artwork and consistently using paper and ink pens to draw crisp lines, it's always so mesmerizing to see expert illustrators show off their skill set of having a steady hand and creativity to draw scenarios I would've never thought of. Here are some of the artworks I believe need some highlights on and the ones I enjoyed the most.
Other than the exhibit, I really enjoyed the interactive-ness of the whole event. Most of the painting tools used was canvas, paper, ink, oil paints, watercolor paints, pastels, and even just pencil sketching. Just as we did in the last part of the exhibition, where we all designed our characters. When it comes to showing my designs, it's pretty nerve-wrecking for me, especially when I use to get judged for the things I enjoyed and the themes I use for my drawings. I would've been able to further develop my character if I had more time, most of the time I take ideas straight from the theme I choose and pick the deeper details later. But overall, seeing the illustrations and all the magnificent artworks made me want to pick up my pen again and see where my creativity would take me. I am used to drawing portraits and I want to venture out my comfort zone of replicating the world around me on paper and draw original things that flow from my mind.
Here's some more highlights and I enjoyed the entire thing with my class. Best Graphic Design Class I could've asked for !
